Recruiting Information

Company Background

PRT Frontier is based in Dryden, ON. We have planted in excess of 145 million trees in North Western Ontario since we started operation in 1989. We anticipate planting approximately 10 million trees with approximately 150 employees in 2009. Our customers include Domtar, Buchanan Forest Products Ltd., and Red Lake Forest Management.

Crews

We tailor our crew size to fit the project, allowing our employees to minimize downtime and maximize earnings over the longest possible season. We recognize the investment that you have made in your time and efforts to plant trees, and we want to make sure that you make the most from that investment.

Our supervisory staff has a minimum of 7 years experience and foremen have on average 5 years experience. Our experienced staff will help you realize full earning potential in the minimum amount of time. Many of our staff are bilingual. We have representatives in most parts of Canada that can give you more insight into what we do.

Training and Information Resource

PRT Frontier is a founding sponsor of Tree-Planter.com and Forest-Safety.com. These sites offer a wealth of information for 1st time tree planters and for veterans for that matter. Why has PRT Frontier invested in these sites?

  1. They are an unbiased information resource for people thinking about going tree planting.
  2. This is a very useful web site that helps planters to prepare themselves for the many rigors of planting.
  3. The information presented will help you through the basics of the job, what to expect and pitfalls to avoid. This preparation will allow you to make the most of your planting experiences to come.
  4. A safety training facility that teaches tree planters how to work (and live) in the bush.

We encourage you to visit these web sites. Once you have had time to look it over, please call or email us for more information that you might need.

Since 2005, PRT Frontier is proud to make available a comprehensive preseason training facility and dietary handbook. This program "Fit to Plant" was completed by Delia Roberts, Ph.D of Selkirk College with significant funding provided by Weyerhaeuser. We strongly encourage all tree planters to visit the link and give the recommendations a try. Any feed back on the program is appreciated.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

General

Our projects have been awarded directly or through limited invitation process by our preferred clients. Our crews plant between 8 and 10 hours per day, 5 or 6 days per week, depending on the project. Most projects operate 6 days per week. Projects run from 35 to 48 total working days and you will be expected to commit to working from May 3 – June 30. Work may be available beyond that time frame.

Wages are earned on a piecework basis. Rates for 2009 will range from $0.09 per tree to $0.11 per tree. Approximately 50% of the land that we plant is mechanically prepared, usually by a Donaren trencher. Payments are made via weekly advances into your bank account during the planting project and again once the project is completed.

We will employ approximately 150 tree planters annually half of whom have previous planting experience. More than half of our work is completed under union agreement.

Camp Facilities

We will always try to place you in the camp of your choice, particularly if you would like to join your friends at a particular camp. This of course is done on a first come, first served basis so arrange this as early as possible.

Employees are not required to cook for themselves. Our professional cooks provide excellent nutritious meat and vegetarian based meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Camp facilities include: kitchen, eating area, drying facilities for clothing, showers, and toilets. Planters must supply their own personal camping equipment. Camp fees are $10 or $25 per day depending on the project that you are placed on.

Transportation

Employees are responsible for their own transportation to and from our projects. Daily transportation to the work site is provided to all employees.

Equipment

We work in all weather conditions. You must come equipped and dressed to do so. Employees must provide their own personal gear and planting equipment. If you do not already have planting gear, it may be purchased from us when you arrive if that is more convenient for you. Please contact us or visit Tree-Planter.com for more information and suggested equipment lists.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want you to be well informed and well prepared.
