PRT Red Rock is located in north central British Columbia south of Prince George, the gateway to northern British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and the state of Alaska.
The nursery is situated on 130 ha (327 acres) of land next to the Fraser River in plant hardiness zone 3. Annual production consists of approximately 8 million greenhouse grown 1+0 container seedlings. Predominant species include interior spruce, lodgepole pine, interior Douglas-fir, aspen, subalpine fir, black spruce, and tamarack.
PRT Red Rock offers a full range of standard seedling products and related nursery services, and specializes in the following areas:
Seedlings for Summer Planting - custom growing programs reliably provide well-conditioned 1+0 seedlings for summer planting.
Specialty Crops - PRT Red Rock has developed expertise in growing quality crops of difficult to grow species such as subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa).
2+0 stock types are offered by PRT Red Rock through PRT's southern nurseries, Harrop at Nelson and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Favourable climatic conditions at those PRT locations and consistent snow cover (Harrop) minimize overwintering risks and provide an ideal environment for the reliable production of 2+0 seedlings. These well-conditioned, robust and well-balanced seedlings are economical and provide high value, especially for sites that are subject to vegetative competition and/or snow press. They are typically used for summer and fall planting on very productive sites where moisture is not limiting, but can also be used for spring planting if grown in large containers.
