In 1987, Charlie Johnson gave up his government job and Bastion Square office to lead a group of fellow government employees as, together, they prepared a bid for the purchase of six forest seedling nurseries from the Government of British Columbia. Johnson's vision was to create, together with his fellow employee owners, a secure future or bastion around which employees could rally to build a strong company. The book From Bastion to Bay tells the remarkable story of that vision, and the leadership, hard work and commitment that helped PRT become the largest and most successful forest nursery company in Canada. The book recounts the company's early struggles and recalls the challenges and rewards of building an employee-owned company. It also describes the growth the company has undergone over 10 years and how that growth recently culminated in a successful initial public offering on Bay Street, Toronto.

While the company has undergone significant expansion in the years following 1998, From Bastion to Bay is an accurate account of the past, present and future of PRT as it was perceived at that time.

From Bastion to Bay is reproduced here as an acknowledgement and celebration of the many PRT employees whose vision helped create PRT. Before you begin browsing through the main sections of the book, we suggest you read the letter of introduction from the co-founders of PRT, Charlie Johnson and Ev Van Eerden.
